Hope's mining museum preserves delightful bits of history

Hope's longtime postmaster, Ann Miller, retired a few years ago and moved across the street to direct the town's mining museum. Period pieces neatly arranged in the museum's displays show off the town's gold rush heritage.

More things to see and do around Hope

For a thrilling adventure, check out guided whitewater raft trips on Six Mile Creek. Recreational gold panning and sluicing are permitted on a section of Resurrection Creek at the end of Resurrection Road. There is a seven mile scenic drive on Palmer Creek Road to Coeur d'Alene primitive campground, and there are plenty of hiking trails to explore.

The most ambitious hiking trail heads across Resurrection Creek on a footbridge and affords a 39 mile hike over Resurrection Pass to Cooper Landing. U.S. Forest Service rental cabins dot the route.

Shorter hikes begin at Porcupine Campground at the end of Hope Highway. The 2.5 mile Hope Point Trail is steep, rocky and not maintained but affords wonderful views. The 4.5 mile Gull Rock Trail is a scenic hike along Turnagain Arm on a maintained trail with a gentle grade.
