Denali is the Native American word for North America's highest peak, Mt. McKinley, rising 20,320 feet among the mountains of the Alaska Range. The surrounding 6 million acre Denali National Park and Preserve encompasses a complete sub-arctic ecosystem, according to its official guardian, the National Park Service. Most of the park remains wilderness with resident populations of moose, caribou, Dall sheep, grizzly bears, wolves and foxes that are frequently seen by park visitors and a few lynx. Denali's wildlife, including a variety of smaller mammals and birds, is the park's other main attraction. When clouds wreathe the peaks and hide Denali's face from view, as happens often in the summer, the wildlife steals the show.
